Favourite Films

Jump to section titled: Favourite Films

Starting from It's a Wonderful Life in 1946 through to Nouvelle Vague in 2025, here are my 100 favourite films. There are lots that are brilliant and don't make the cut but it's a nice round number.

Based on these films, my favourite directors are Joel Coen (4 films), Wes Anderson (4), Céline Sciamma (3), Jean-Pierre Jeunet (3) and Ridley Scott (3).

Actors that crop up a lot are Colin Farrell (3 films), Ewan McGregor (3), Frances McDormand (3), Matt Damon (3), Robert De Niro (3) and Robert Redford (3).

A few films are in here because I watched them a long time ago and they have a nostalgic appeal. Films like Bullitt, The Sting and Three Days of the Condor.

Some older films I only discovered relatively recently: La Strada, La Dolce Vita and Dog Day Afternoon.

One film is in here twice: Purple Noon (aka Plan Soleil) and The Talented Mr. Ripley. I would have added it again for Steven Zaillian's 2024 TV miniseries Ripley with Andrew Scott but that's not a film.

Only one actor is connected with more than one film in my top 5: Isaach de Bankolé, who plays a Parisian cab driver in Night on Earth and Raymond in Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, both directed by Jim Jarmusch.
